Crystals, pearls or sequins: which embellishment suits your gown?

The short answer

Crystals give the most sparkle under evening lights, pearls give a soft, classic glow, and sequins and bugle beads add shimmer and texture with less weight. Most couture gowns mix them. Choose by how the gown will be lit, how much weight you can carry, and where the light should fall.

How do the main embellishments compare?

Which embellishment photographs best?

Crystals catch flash and spotlights; pearls look rich in daylight and soft light; sequins read as texture in video. For a ballroom wedding night with strong lighting, crystals concentrated on the bodice and veil edge are spectacular. For an outdoor milcha in daylight, pearls and tonal beads look more refined.

Pearl is ranked 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which means it's very soft and easily scratched or abraded.

How heavy can a gown get?

Heavier than most brides expect. All-over crystal embroidery on a bodice, sleeves and train adds real weight and stiffness. That is why couture places embellishment where it is seen, around the face, the waist and the hem, and lets the fabric breathe elsewhere. Ask your designer how heavy the finished gown will be.

How do you care for pearls on a gown?

Gently. The GIA ranks pearl at 2.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, very soft and easily scratched, and lists hair spray, perfume, cosmetics and perspiration among the things that can damage it [source]. Dress after applying perfume and hair spray, and have the gown cleaned by a specialist who knows embellished silk; pearls should never go through steam or ultrasonic cleaning [source].

Is embellishment a Gulf tradition?

Very much so. Gulf wedding wear has long been decorated with metallic thread, cord and beads. A 1990 UAE silk cloak in the Zay Initiative collection was hand-beaded in gold and made for a wedding [source], and Emirati Al Talli braids traditionally combined cotton with silver or gold thread [source].

How is hand embellishment planned?

On the pattern, after the toile, so motifs land in the right place on your body. The design is drawn, transferred to the fabric, embroidered, then assembled. It is the longest stage of a bespoke gown; see how early to order.

How do you choose the right amount?

Decide where you want people to look: the face, the waist or the train. Concentrate the work there and let it fade elsewhere. A gown with one strong area of embellishment often looks more expensive than one covered evenly.

Can embellishment be added later?

Small additions can be made before the final fitting. Large changes after embroidery has started mean unpicking, which risks marking silk, so finalise the design at the toile stage.

How should an embellished gown be packed for travel?

Lay it flat or folded with acid-free tissue between beaded areas so stones do not scratch each other or snag tulle. Carry it as hand luggage in a breathable bag. On arrival, hang it with the skirt supported and let a specialist steam it from the reverse.

Do sequins and crystals add heat?

Indirectly. Dense embellishment stiffens fabric and reduces airflow, which matters at outdoor events. For a December evening, when mean temperatures range from 17.7°C to 21.8°C [source], that is rarely a problem; for an October afternoon it is worth keeping heavy work to the bodice.

Frequently asked questions

Do crystals fall off a wedding dress?

Hand-sewn crystals are secure. Glued stones are more likely to come loose, so ask how they are attached.

Are pearls or crystals more expensive?

It depends on quality and quantity. The hours of hand-sewing usually cost more than the materials.

Can sequins be steamed?

Not directly. Steam from the reverse at a distance, or let a specialist press the gown.

Which embellishment is lightest?

Sequins and fine bugle beads are the lightest for the shimmer they give. Crystals and pearls add more weight, so they are usually concentrated on the bodice, sleeves and veil edge.

Do pearls on a gown yellow?

They can, with exposure to perfume, cosmetics and perspiration. Wipe them gently after wearing and store the gown in a cool, dark place.
