The short answer

For a civil wedding in Abu Dhabi or Dubai, most brides choose a refined, easy-to-move-in look for the ceremony, such as a tailored midi or column dress, then change into an evening gown for the celebration. Civil ceremonies can be arranged quickly, but allow eight to twelve weeks for the dress.

Who can have a civil wedding in the UAE?

Abu Dhabi allows civil marriage for non-Muslims under Law No. 14 of 2021, and both partners must be at least 18 [source]. Dubai's civil marriage service enables couples to obtain a civil wedding licence in just 24 hours, with a minimum age of 21 [source]. Demand is high: the Abu Dhabi Civil Family Court received nearly 15,000 civil marriage applications between January and September 2025 [source].

What should a bride wear to the ceremony?

Civil ceremonies are usually short and held in an office or a small venue, so a full ball gown can feel out of place. Popular choices are a tailored midi dress, a sleek column gown, a dress with a detachable skirt or train, or a sharp bridal suit. Keep the neckline and length appropriate for a government building; we can add a sheer cape or jacket for the ceremony and remove it later.

What about the celebration afterwards?

Many couples hold a dinner or party the same evening. A detachable overskirt turns one dress into two looks, or you can plan a separate evening gown. Dubai hotels averaged 80.7% occupancy in 2025 [source], so venues fill quickly; settle the venue first, then the dress.

How quickly can a dress be made?

A licence can come together fast, but a made-to-measure dress still needs time for fittings. Plan eight to twelve weeks for a simple design, longer for embroidery. If your date is close, message us and we will tell you honestly what is possible.

Can guests travelling from abroad be fitted?

Yes. We take measurements by video for the first stage and schedule the fittings around arrival dates, ideally leaving at least a week between the final fitting and the ceremony.

What colours and fabrics suit a daytime ceremony?

Daytime ceremonies suit ivory, champagne, blush and soft metallics in fabrics that hold their shape in heat: silk crepe, mikado and double-faced satin for structure, silk organza for a light overlay. Avoid very sheer unlined fabric in bright daylight. Summer heat is real: the National Center of Meteorology recorded 51.8°C in Al Ain in August 2025 [source], so a short walk between car and building matters.

Can a civil wedding dress work for a later celebration abroad?

Often, yes. Many international couples marry in the UAE and celebrate with family elsewhere later. A dress with a detachable skirt or overlay can become a shorter reception dress, or the reverse. Tell us both dates at the consultation so we can plan fittings and how the dress will travel.

What should guests wear to a civil ceremony?

Smart daytime dress: a midi or long dress with sleeves or a light jacket, in any colour except white or ivory. Keep shoulders covered in government buildings.

What should you bring to the first fitting?

Bring the shoes you will wear, the underwear or shapewear you plan to use, and any jewellery or hair accessory. If the ceremony and party are in different places, bring photographs of both. These details change the hem length, neckline and the way a detachable piece is fastened, so seeing them early saves a fitting later.

If you are travelling to the UAE for the wedding, send your measurements and a short video of you walking in your chosen shoes. We cut the toile from these and fit it in the first days after you arrive.

Frequently asked questions

Is a long gown appropriate for a UAE civil ceremony?

It can be, but many brides prefer a shorter or slimmer look for the ceremony and a long gown for the evening.

Can one dress work for the ceremony and the party?

Yes. A detachable skirt, train or cape lets one dress change for the evening.

How far ahead should I order?

At least eight to twelve weeks for a simple design; longer for embroidery.
