The short answer
An Emirati bride usually wears three or more looks: a refined gown for the milcha (the marriage contract), a traditional or modern green look for the henna night, and a long, richly embroidered white gown for the wedding night's women's celebration. Each look needs its own design and fittings, so start six to nine months ahead.
What happens at an Emirati wedding?
An Emirati wedding is a sequence of events rather than one day. The families agree the engagement, the couple sign the marriage contract before witnesses and usually exchange rings at a small ceremony called the milcha, and a henna night for the bride and her friends follows before the wedding itself [source]. The women's and men's celebrations are held separately.
By law, the advance dowry in an Islamic marriage may not exceed AED 20,000 and the deferred dowry may not exceed AED 30,000 [source]. Families often put more of their planning into the celebrations and the bride's wardrobe.
What does the bride wear for the milcha?
The milcha is smaller and more intimate than the wedding, often held at the bride's family home. Brides tend to choose a soft, elegant gown: pastel or ivory, long sleeves, fine embroidery rather than heavy beading, and a matching shayla. It should photograph well up close, because guests are near and the ring exchange is the moment everyone records.
until the late 1980s Emirati brides did not follow the current custom of wearing green for their henna night
What does the bride wear for the henna night?
Green is now the colour most associated with the Emirati henna night, worn as a jalabiya, kaftan or modern gown with gold embroidery. The custom is newer than many people assume: a UAE dress collection record notes that until the late 1980s Emirati brides did not wear green for henna night [source]. Today brides choose anything from a traditional embroidered thobe to a sculpted modern gown. Our henna night guide covers the options.
What does the bride wear on the wedding night?
The wedding gown is the centrepiece: usually a long white Gulf-style gown, heavily embellished, with a long train and veil [source]. Because the main celebration is for women, the gown can be open at the neck or shoulders inside, with a matching cape, veil or abaya for the moment the groom joins and guests cover their hair with shaylas.
Crystal, pearl, sequin and gold thread are typical. We plan where embroidery sits so it catches stage lighting and reads in photographs without making the gown too heavy to move and dance in.
How do we plan several bridal looks at once?
We design the wedding gown first, since it takes longest, then the henna night and milcha looks so the colours and embroidery tell one story. Plan for:
| Look | Start this far ahead | Fittings |
|---|---|---|
| Wedding night gown | 6–9 months | 3–4 |
| Henna night look | 3–4 months | 2–3 |
| Milcha gown | 3–4 months | 2 |
| Abaya or cape to match | 2 months | 1–2 |

Can I bring fabric from my Zahba?
Yes. Al Zahba, the groom's family's gifts to the bride, traditionally include silk, jewellery and perfume [source]. Bring the fabric to the consultation. Fine silks from the Zahba often become henna night jalabiyas or linings; we will tell you honestly if a fabric is not suited to the design you want.
How do you keep a wedding gown comfortable for a long night?
An Emirati wedding night is long: arrival, the zaffa entrance, photographs, dancing and greeting hundreds of guests. We distribute embroidery weight across the bodice and skirt, use breathable silk linings, and build the train so it can be bustled or detached later in the evening. Venues are air-conditioned, but cars, corridors and outdoor photographs are not; the National Center of Meteorology recorded 51.8°C in Al Ain in August 2025 [source].
What should the bride bring to her consultation?
Bring photographs of gowns you love and any you dislike, the dates and venues of each celebration, fabric from your Zahba if you want to use it, and the heel height you plan to wear. If your mother or sisters will help decide, bring them too.

Frequently asked questions
How many outfits does an Emirati bride need?
Most brides plan three main looks: milcha, henna night and wedding night. Some add a second wedding-night look or a morning-after gown.
Can the wedding gown be modest and still dramatic?
Yes. Long sleeves, a high neckline and a full lining can be combined with a long train, a cathedral veil and dense embroidery.
Do I need to visit the atelier for every fitting?
We recommend the toile and final fittings in person. Other check-ins can be by video.
Is green required for the henna night?
No. Green is the popular choice today, but brides also wear gold, ivory and jewel tones.
