The short answer

The cost of a bespoke wedding dress in the UAE depends on five things: the fabric, the amount of hand embroidery and crystal work, the hours of construction, the number of fittings and how much time you allow. Rush orders cost more. Quotes in the UAE should also show the 5 per cent VAT.

Why is there no fixed price for a bespoke gown?

Because every gown is designed from a blank page. Two dresses with the same silhouette can differ by months of handwork. That is why serious ateliers give a written quotation after the first consultation, once the design, fabric and embellishment are agreed, rather than a price list. It also protects you: under the UAE's consumer protection law [source], you are entitled to clear information about what you are buying, so ask for the quotation in writing.

How much does the fabric matter?

A great deal. Pure silk crepe, mikado, duchess satin and silk tulle cost far more than polyester equivalents, and a cathedral-length skirt can use many metres. Silk's value comes from how it is made: the Food and Agriculture Organization notes a single silk filament can run 500 to 1,500 metres [source]. The lining, interfacing and boning add further cost, and they decide how comfortable the gown is in the heat. Our fabric guide for UAE heat explains the trade-offs.

The rate of VAT is 5 per cent.

Why does hand embroidery change the price so much?

Hand embroidery is priced in hours, not metres. Each crystal, pearl and bugle bead is stitched on individually, and a heavily embroidered bodice and train can take weeks of work by several embroiderers. The pattern must be drawn to your measurements first, so the motifs sit correctly on the finished gown. Concentrating embroidery on the bodice, sleeves and hem keeps the effect while controlling hours and weight.

What else goes into the quotation?

What a bespoke bridal quotation usually covers
ItemWhat drives it
DesignSketches, revisions, pattern drafting
ToileA trial gown in calico to perfect the fit
Fabric and liningFibre, weight, quantity, imports
EmbellishmentCrystals, pearls, hours of handwork
FittingsUsually a toile fitting plus two or three in fabric
ExtrasVeil, cape, detachable train, matching abaya

Does timing affect the cost?

Yes. A gown started six to nine months ahead can be scheduled calmly. A rush order means overtime for the embroidery team and express fabric shipping. The wedding calendar is busy: Dubai registered 7,265 marriage contracts in 2025, up 6.3 per cent on 2024 [source]. Use the bridal timeline planner to see your dates, and read how early to order.

How do VAT and deposits work?

VAT was introduced in the UAE on 1 January 2018 at 5 per cent [source], and a VAT-registered atelier should show it on the quotation and invoice. Bespoke work normally needs a deposit before fabric is bought, because the materials are cut for one person. Check the payment schedule, what happens if the wedding date moves, and how changes after the toile are charged.

How can you control the budget without losing the look?

Spend on what is seen and felt: the fabric against the skin and the embroidery near the face. Choose one statement element rather than several. Design one gown that converts, with a detachable train or cape, instead of two separate looks. Tell the designer your budget at the start; a good atelier designs to it rather than around it.

Is bespoke worth it compared with a designer label?

It depends on what you value. A label gown buys a recognised name and a design shared with other brides; bespoke buys a design that exists once, cut to your body, with fittings included. Alterations to a ready-made couture gown can be extensive and are rarely in the price. Many UAE brides also need several looks for the milcha, henna night and wedding night, and a single atelier can design them as one wardrobe, which often costs less than buying each separately. Read bespoke vs made-to-measure.

What questions should you ask before accepting a quotation?

Ask what fabric and lining are named, how many fittings are included, what embroidery is hand-sewn, whether veil or cape are included, the payment schedule, and whether VAT at 5 per cent [source] is shown. Ask how changes after the toile are priced, and what happens if the wedding date moves. Our list of twelve questions for a designer covers the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Do you publish prices for bespoke gowns?

No. Every gown is different, so we give a written quotation after the first consultation, once the design and materials are agreed.

Is VAT included in a bespoke dress price in the UAE?

VAT is charged at 5 per cent. Ask whether a quotation is shown before or after VAT.

Does a detachable train cost more?

Slightly more than a fixed train, but it can replace a second gown, which usually saves money overall.

Can I add embroidery later?

Small additions are possible before the final fitting. Major changes after the toile add time and cost.
